Up Close with the Kings: What It’s Like to Feed a Big Cat

What does it feel like to stand just inches from a tiger, holding its lunch in your hand? It’s not the kind of moment that fades quickly. The sound alone — the deep, rumbling breath, the crunch of bone — stays with you. Feeding a big cat isn’t just exciting. It’s humbling. You’re face to face with power, instinct, and a kind of wild grace that doesn’t soften, even in captivity.

Let’s clear something up straight away. Feeding a big cat at a zoo is not about playing zookeeper for a day. It’s a carefully controlled, highly supervised experience, usually reserved for special behind-the-scenes programmes. There are safety barriers. There are protocols. But even with all that in place, it doesn’t take anything away from the rawness of it.

You’re not just tossing in meat and watching from afar. You’re close enough to see the texture of their tongue, the flecks of meat in their fur, and the way their eyes lock onto yours — not out of affection, but calculation. You’re holding the food, and for a second, you’re part of the hunt.

Benner's Gardens Fencing

We live in the country so there are lots of wildlife animals running around our yard, especially with the warm weather. And many of those are not animals we want hanging around our chicken coop. In the past we've actually lost chickens to those critters so we know they are out there. Since we got some new chickens recently we've had to do some added prevention to make sure they can't get in and feast on our new babies. That's where Benner's Gardens comes into play. They have a really nice line of rodent barrier fencing that is perfect for the job. I like their fencing because it's the PVC-coated steel looks nicer than just plain metal fencing like we've had before. The black coating gives it a more updated and quality look if you ask me. Plus it doesn't snag as easy when you're installing it like the exposed metal fencing does. I know our old fencing is rusting in many places after years of being out in the weather and it just doesn't look good anymore. As we are able to we plan to update our fencing to the hex fencing from Benner's Gardens so it all looks fresh and nice out back of our house.

Benner's Gardens also offers a variety of other fencing options as well as gates and accessories. Be sure to check them out next time you're in the market for a new fence!

Ready to do a little bird watching!

We live out in the country so there are alot of birds around and I love watching them out my big picture window. It's really relaxing just sitting and watching them fly all around and then settling down when they find the perfect spot. Now that I have my new bird feeding station I can attract all sorts of different birds. It's really quite awesome because it holds water, food, and has hooks for planters or other bird feeders. So much better than having separate handing/standing things in the yard for each individual item.

It was super easy to put together and I had it done in less than 10 minutes by myself including the time it took to put it in the ground. It doesn't require any tools, just your hands which to me is great. You get to decide how high or low the water dish, mesh feeder tray, and third hook are on the pole which I really like. I put the third hook at the top for now until I decide what I'm going to hang from it knowing that I can easily move it later.

The poles are heavy duty steel so they won't bend with weight on them if you use the hooks for planters. I'm going to get some pretty flowers for mine to attract hummingbirds. At the bottom of the mail pole there is a spike so it will easily go into the ground. I had no trouble using my foot to press the bottom into my yard to secure it upright. Now I just have to wait for the birds to learn where it is and enjoy them!

Features:
• Standing at 91” tall, this multi feeder is versatile enough to accommodate several bird feeders to attract birds of all different species
• Features 3 hooks of varying sizes to hold bird feeders, a water bowl that doubles as a bird bath, and a mesh tray
• Adjustable components allow you to customize this feeding station to your liking, and an 82” above ground height keeps the feed out of reach of thieving critters
• Rust-resistant coating and sturdy steel pole ensure that this feeding station will last for years, and a forked prong base adds stability
• Overall Dimensions: 21.25”(W) x 91”(H)

Furry Family Members

Ever since I got my first cat when I was a child I've always had a soft spot for sweet little kittens. If it weren't for my husband telling me no I'd probably be a crazy cat lady by now. Over the years we've had some cats and a few dogs in our home. Some are still with us while others unfortunately are not.  As a pet owner I have to admit they each have a special place in my heart. Each with their own little personalities. Our first family cat was Oreo (above) and he's still with us today. He's super laid back and really just wants to have your attention all the time.

Our latest additions are a dog named Pete and a cat named Anna. We adopted them both this month from the Almost Home Humane Society. They are both settling in well and seem to be enjoying their new homes. I'm planning to share more about our pets and hopefully start doing some awesome pet product reviews for you too!

Do you have any fur babies?
