How to Target Teens on Social Media Advertising

Advertisers make a smart choice when they choose to market themselves on social media, especially if your target demographics are kids and teens. Unfortunately, problems arise when children and teens are exposed to negative messages and influences, and as an advertiser, it’s up to you to ensure your ad doesn’t cross the line. Advertisers who want to target teens in social media must have ideas on what type of platforms teens use nowadays. Based on social media statistics 2022 teens are mostly active on Facebook and YouTube so as an advertiser you shouldn't miss these social media platforms.

Did you know? Teenagers make up a quarter of social media users; therefore social media is the place to advertise if they’re your target demo.

Don’t Be Invisible to Your Target Demographic
You wouldn’t want your advertisement pinged as something inappropriate because parental controls will ensure it’s never viewed. Parents don’t want their children viewing information that isn’t healthy for them. That’s why it’s important to use age-appropriate language and images in your ad.

The parental monitoring app WebSafety is something parents can use to protect their kids from the dangers of the Internet, and parents are encouraged to use such apps because they keep kids safe. Advertisers are recommended to learn how they work, so their advertisements can be designed with healthy boundaries. Try downloading an app to determine if your advertisement is considered kid-friendly.

If Something Seems too Risky, Don’t Do It
are well-aware that their kids have a presence on social media. They understand it’s possible their kid will be exposed to a bad message, harassment from strangers or bullies, and sometimes forced to view inappropriate images in side-bar advertisements. If they deem your advertisement is inappropriate they’re going to get angry, flag your post, and possibly report you, which could prohibit you from advertising again.

Don’t Sucker Them In To Impulse Buys
Just like grown-ups, kids can get carried away by fanciful and appealing ads. They may proceed to make a purchase, but if they’re doing this behind their parents back, the purchase may end up costing you. Parents are going to fight for a refund on purchases their children made without their consent. The way combat this is to ask that children get consent beforehand.

This is the perfect example of how children are affected by advertisements. And, it’s proof that advertisers have a moral obligation to protect kids from negative ads. One simple example is how liquor commercials can trigger children's or teenagers' curiosity when, to begin with, they should not be seen by them.

Proper Guidelines for Kids/Teenagers Ads
On social media, it’s important that ads be vetted to ensure they’re appropriate. If your ad’s directed toward adults, you can alter it to only be shown to adults. Conversely, you can alter it to only show up on a teen’s page. There are parameters you can set in regards to age, location, gender and more. If you make sure the ad is kid-friendly, you should have no problems.

On the other hand, if you disseminated pornography or bad language or otherwise inappropriate content, you may end up banned from the site. Worse, you could end up charged if a parent notifies the police. Keep your business safe and don’t take the risk.
