Many hobbyists feed the same flake day in and day out for years and somehow think that's okay. It's not. Fish build immunity right at the dinner table, and a few small tweaks to the menu can build stronger resistance to disease than anything else.
Your flake is probably low on vitamin C
It might come as a surprise, but fish cannot synthesize their own vitamin C. They lack the enzyme (L-gulonolactone oxidase) that is used by most animals for its production. This means all the vitamin C must be ingested through their diet. This would not be such a big issue if the vitamin C in commercial feed was not lost as the bag or tin is opened. Ascorbic acid degrades quite rapidly and by three or four months of storage, approximately 50% of the initial vitamin C content of flake food has been lost.
The minimal concentration to avoid a deficiency in fish may be as low as 25-50 mg/kg of feed according to NRC (National Research Council). However, the concentration in the diet used to demonstrate improved immunity, lysozyme activity, and survival after challenge ranged between 100-500 mg/kg. Giving sufficient vitamin to avoid symptoms of scurvy is not the same as optimizing leukocyte function and collagen synthesis. Soaking feed in a supplemented vitamin C liquid or rotating feeds with higher natural C content will release you to some extent from guessing these levels.
Beta-glucans prime the immune system before it's needed
Beta-glucans are derived from yeast or oats, and function in a very different way than vitamins. They bind to certain receptors on macrophages, neutrophils, and other innate immune cells, effectively putting those cells on red alert so your fish's first line of defense is ready to respond quickly when something actually appears. This is important for fish more so than mammals, especially when it comes to their heavy reliance on innate immunity as opposed to the slower antibody-mediated response. If you're using a commercial preparation, just check the label to see if beta-glucans are among the ingredients, and while it may be somewhat less precise, you can also try adding a simple beta-glucan supplement to homemade or soaked food. Unlike many other immune-boosting compounds, there's less worrisome data on long-term daily use, so the risk will be fairly low.
The gut is an immune organ, not just a digestion tube
A significant portion of a fish's immune system is located in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, not somewhere else in the body - which means gut health and immune health are more or less the same discussion. Probiotic strains like Lactobacillus, whether from a probiotic feed or an occasional live-culture top-off, help crowd out pathogens before they can establish a population, and directly support the immune tissue that lines the gut wall. This is one of the more unheralded tweaks, because fixing a problem before it happens doesn't immediately look like a problem was fixed. The benefit is fewer digestive and bacterial issues over time, which is harder to notice until it stops happening.
Fat quality matters more than fat source
Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA specifically, work with immune signaling and maintaining viable cell membranes. Plant-based oils are hit or miss in most fish species so as a substitute, they're weak, but the real problem is this: oxidized or expired food does active damage, not just insufficient good. Rancid fats break down fat-soluble vitamins and generate free radicals, which will stress an immune system already having enough trouble even more. Check expiration dates, store food in a cool dry place, and don't buy more than you'll use in a few months.
Nutrition is prevention, not a cure. Even with all of these factors in place, bacterial infections still occur, and when they do, having a treatment plan ready is vital. Keeping something like fish antibiotics on hand to support healthier aquarium fish means you're not scrambling when symptoms start showing, because good feeding habits lower risk, but won't eliminate it completely.
Garlic isn't a gimmick
Studies in aquaculture have examined the benefits of adding crushed fresh garlic or garlic extract to fish food to help mitigate microbial and parasitic infections. Allicin, which is a biologically active component of garlic, has been shown to possess strong antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. It's not a cure, but mixing a small amount into soaked pellets or frozen food once or twice a week can potentially help boost resistance. It won't replace a real treatment when a parasite outbreak is already underway, but as a standing part of the diet, it adds a layer of defense that plain flake doesn't offer.
So, get your diet right first. It's the cheapest, lowest-effort change you can make, and it pays off by having fewer outbreaks and faster recoveries when something does go sideways.
