6 Ways to Fill Your Time When Traveling

Traveling can be the adventure of a lifetime,  it can also mean lots of long waits when your flight is delayed or your car gets stuck in traffic, so it’s good to have a few things you can do to keep the inevitable travel boredom at bay…

1. Become a Spider Solitaire Champion

Caught in a long layover? Then it could be the perfect opportunity for you to play a few rounds Spider Solitaire on your phone or tablet. So many of us give up on playing games as we get older and the responsibilities start to pile up, but you know what? Playing games can be really good for you, not only because it can make you feel young again but because it is great for your brain, and of course, it will beat that travel boredom fast.

2. Start a Travel Blog or Journal

Always wanted to try your hand at writing? A lull in your travel plans could be the perfect opportunity for you to start. Take out a pen and paper, or even your phone and start wiring down your thoughts on the places you have been the things you have seen, and the people you have met along the way. It could just bring out a new passion in you! You could even start a blog!

3. Photography Quests

Turn your downtime into a quest for the perfect photo. Even if you’re not venturing out, there’s a whole world of interesting subjects around you. Try a photo challenge: capture reflections, play with shadows, or find the color blue in unexpected places. Not only will you develop a keen eye for detail, but you'll also have an impressive collection to show off when you get back home.

4. Listen and Learn

Download a few podcasts or audiobooks before you leave home. Whether you’re into history, science, or spine-tingling thrillers, there’s something about listening to a good story that can make time fly. Plus, podcasts are a great way to get insights into your travel destination—local legends, cultural tips, or language lessons can add an extra layer to your travel experience.

5. Sketch Your Surroundings

No need to be Da Vinci to sketch what’s around you. All you need is a notepad and a pen. Sketching can be incredibly relaxing and a fun way to document your journey. Draw the view from your window, the bustling street cafe, or that quirky statue you found in a hidden alley. It’s a great way to enhance your observation skills and create unique souvenirs that are 100% your own.

6. Mingle with the Locals

If language isn’t a barrier, striking up a conversation with locals can be incredibly rewarding. You might learn about secret spots, get recommendations that aren’t in your travel guide, or even make new friends. Local interactions can often lead to the most memorable travel experiences.

With these creative ways to fill your travel downtime, you’ll find yourself, not sighing when your flight is delayed, but relaxing into it!
